When it comes to “location, location, location”, few places tick more “this place is perfect!” boxes than Hampstead.

It’s a bustling, vibrant area: packed with charming period properties and bursting with greenery. It is home to a wealth of diverse shops and restaurants, and has excellent schools and transport links.

Renowned for its charming village atmosphere, abundance of green space thanks to nearby Hampstead Heath, and access to some of the best schools in London, Hampstead has long been a lure for wealthy professionals.

They may have called Hampstead home for generations, but all sorts of people are now putting down roots here - Hampstead really does have something for everyone.

That is why, as experienced estate agents, we are deeply plugged into this area and know it’s among the most sought-after places to live in and around north-west London.

If you’re dreaming of finding your forever home or long-term property investment in this beautiful part of the capital, our award-winning estate agency, the appointed Guild member for NW3, can make it a reality. We pride ourselves on giving unbiased advice to both seller and vendor.

The jewel of north-west London

Back in the 18th century, wealthier people flocked to Hampstead, drawn by its clean, healthful spring waters and the surrounding open landscapes.

It also attracted a host of intellectuals and artists, and many buildings in Hampstead are dotted with 60 blue plaques; a testament to its many celebrated former residents, such as DH Lawrence, Florence Nightingale and John Keats.

Their legacy is the artistic vibe that exists in Hampstead to this day, as well as the many beautiful period houses, including large Victorian and Edwardian mansions, standing proudly on winding, cobbled streets.

Many have been passed down the generations by the aforementioned wealthy professionals and entrepreneurs. Some have been sympathetically converted into mansion flats and apartments and are among the most chain-resistant sale properties.

Hampstead Heath

One of the major reasons people come and live in Hampstead is the Heath. This glorious area of parkland comprises 320 hectares of woodland and meadows, and is among the biggest green spaces in London.

Stretching from Hampstead to Highgate, Hampstead Heath is a focal point of the region: the ideal place to soak up natural beauty or take part in lots of different sports, including outdoor swimming, in one of its three open-air pools.

As well as hosting open-air concerts and an arts festival, the summit at Parliament Hill, with its breathtaking views of the London skyline, is a must-see.

Hidden treasures

Hampstead Heath is also the location of Kenwood House, a former stately home now an English Heritage site.

Built in the 17th century by the Earl of Mansfield, the estate has breathtaking interiors and notable art collections. The formal gardens feature some beautiful sculptures, while ancient trees are among more than 112 acres of parkland.

Another hidden gem on Hampstead Heath is Hill Garden and Pergola, the perfect location for an evening stroll.

This charming example of Edwardian extravagance dates back to 1905, while the Pergola, designed by mastermind landscape architect Thomas Mawson, is Grade II-listed.

What to do in Hampstead village

Despite the ‘village’ feel that you find in Hampstead, its gorgeous High Street and the local area, it is far from a sleepy place to live.

As experienced Hampstead estate agents, we know there is a multitude of things to see and do, whatever your interests or passions.

Culture lovers

Alongside the green spaces and charming period properties found all over Hampstead village and the surrounding area, there are also lots of attractions for residents who love culture and history.

Hampstead is home to many museums, including the Freud Museum, Keats House Museum, and the Hampstead Museum at the Grade I-listed Burgh House.

The Camden Arts Centre houses world-class contemporary art exhibitions, as well as resident artists, workshops and events. If you prefer to buy rather than browse, head just off Finchley Road to the Hampstead School of Art.

For film fans, the Everyman cinema, originally opened in 1933, offers the chance to enjoy a three-course meal with your movie, while you relax on a reclined sofa.

Eating out in Hampstead

Whatever your food tastes run to, Hampstead can provide for them all. From a tasty snack at the much-loved La Creperie de Hampstead, to a three-course meal at the family-run, award-winning Italian eatery Le Gaffe, there is something to tempt every appetite.

Great pubs in Hampstead include the King William IV pub on the High Street, as well as The Flask and The Horseshoe just off it. If you’re taking in Hampstead Heath, be sure to visit The Wells for a post-ramble, al fresco tipple.

Shopping

Our Hampstead team loves the High Street. This jewel is an eclectic mix of high-end brand stores and boutiques, alongside indie, local outlets.

Away from the large Edwardian mansions and Victorian architecture, the smaller cobbled streets are also home to the Hampstead antique and craft emporium.

There, you’ll find a variety of independently-owned stores and gift shops that will offer a warm welcome and lots of goodies to browse.

If you want to go big, Hampstead is less than five miles from Brent Cross Shopping Centre, while the bright lights of London’s West End shopping area is also easily accessible.

Transport links to Hampstead

Thanks to the great service offered by the Northern Line tube station, your Hampstead property is just 15 minutes from the West End or the City.

The Jubilee Line in West Hampstead also links to Westminster, Waterloo, London Bridge and Canary Wharf.

If you prefer staying above ground, the Overground orbital rail system has a separate station at nearby Hampstead Heath. It connects Hampstead to all the Zone 2 surrounding suburbs, north of the river.

The overland North London link at West Hampstead will whisk you to Richmond and east London.

Hampstead is also well served by the A1M motorway, while other key transport roads, including the M25, can be easily reached.
